Lice are parasites that live on people’s heads. The female lays five to ten eggs a day. These eggs (nits) can be seen attached to the hair root. Lice only live on human hair, so animals cannot spread them. They are passed by direct contact from one person to another (head to head) and they do not fly or jump, they move directly. They can also can be transmitted by indirect contact through personal items such as combs,  brushes, hats, scarves, etc.
If you have detected the presence of lice or only eggs, you must undergo the following treatment:

Treatment for lice

1. Apply a permethrin lotion or shampoo to the hair (permethrin is a pesticide that paralyses and kills the eggs and lice). This product is not toxic and dermal absorption is negligible. In the pharmacy there are various brands and concentrations from 1 to 1.5%. Lather the product, especially rubbing it into the neck and behind the ears as these are the places where lice live the most.
2. After 8-10 hours, comb the hair with a thick tooth comb, thoroughly checking to see if there are any eggs. Then wash the head and when it is clean, it is a good idea to rub balm or vinegar through the hair to help break the mucus that the eggs stick to.
3. Repeat this treatment after one week in order to eliminate the possibility of some eggs staying alive.
4. It is important not to use pesticide products (permethrin) as prevention, as it could create resistance.

What can you do to prevent them?

1. Maintain good personal hygiene.
2. Wash hair regularly.
3. Use a comb with thin prongs for children
4. Check children’s hair, especially behind the ears and neck, looking for nits daily.
5. Contact the school immediately if your child has lice.
6. Do not take the child to the school while they have head lice.
